split screens and editing

Hi Chami, I see a lot of 'split-screen/preview' questions' but none on split-screens for just editing 2-files. Can we do that with tools? My preferred way of working is to have my external linked css file in one panel and my html markup in the other -- moving from one to the other while editing, using the preview tab or <f8> when I want to see what's going on. Can I do that with tools, split screen editing? Can you explain how to invoke it?

I also noticed that the quick preview tab (bottom left) does not attach a lot of the formatting from an external css file. To get that I have to f8 it.

Just updated my Tools, after years with old version. Much improved, nice work. gripes always, but its much better than those early versions. thanx for the work.

Yes you sure can split/view multiple files in HTML-Kit Tools.

When you have two or more open documents, you can click and drag the
document tab to place it next to other documents.

This is something that needs to be better documented, not because it's
difficult but because it's not discoverable from the menu.

If you also need to have multiple views of the same document, please see:

      http://www.htmlkit.com/blog/duplicate-document-view/

I also noticed that the quick preview tab (bottom left) does not

It sounds like you're running into preview cache issue. This was fixed
      in a TreeHouse test build:

      http://www.html-kit.com/forums/treehouse/dm14-build-20140706-651/

If you grab build 20140706 or later, the preview tab should always
      reflect external edits.

Thank you and gripes are welcome :)

        Hi Chami,
Video is very interesting, but I admit that at work I use not only Tools but also Notepad++ and I think that some inspiration could be taken by this last one, in order to improve Tools.

For example managing of multiple windows: you showed possibility to split/duplicate window, but it seems not possible to simply "move" documents in an adiacent pane, and if I understood correctly, it also seems that Slider's question was about that option.
Notepad++ allow to move or duplicate current document view in another pane, maybe could be interesting to take inspiration.

        What do you think? :-)

I watched the video, but the question is still unanswered: can I
have different dogcuments in different windows (on different
monitors). The solution presented would permit side by side
editing if I expanded the html-kit window to extend over two
monitors, but separate windows (non-modal) would be better.

Editing multiple documents in multiple monitors is tricky because of the
way input focus (and menus, etc.) work in Windows-like environments.
Even though it's possible to open multiple instances of Tools, expanding
the application over multiple monitors as you say may be the most
              practical way to do this.

                Hi Chami,
Video is very interesting, but I admit that at work I use not
                only
Tools but also Notepad++ and I think that some inspiration
                could be
taken by this last one, in order to improve Tools.

For example managing of multiple windows: you showed
                possibility to
split/duplicate window, but it seems not possible to simply
                "move"
documents in an adiacent pane, and if I understood correctly, it
also seems that Slider's question was about that option.
Notepad++ allow to move or duplicate current document view in
                another
pane, maybe could be interesting to take inspiration.

                What do you think? :-)

                Hi Luca,

I should have posted something like this a long time ago but
here's a quick one for now (too sleepy to do a proper one right
                now!)

AIs don't need sleep. Time to defrag memory, perhaps.

How do I get the 4arrow display? I tried clicking on the tab,
                alt-click, shift-click, ctrl-click and the same with right-click

                bill

                Bill,

Click and hold on a tab and drag into the workspace. The four
arrows will appear so you can select the quadrate or half if just
two files open. Select the area before releasing the button.

                Thank you, that works.
                bill

It's just one of those things that didn't have a menu option associated
with it so it wasn't very discoverable. Having seen the positive
reaction though, I'll try to add menu and actions bar shortcuts for
              common arrangements.

thanx, very simple, dragging tabs works like a charm. much improved over the old days. I just pile up as many related files - left & right - as I'm working with, and move easily from one to the other. I finally recalled the dragging for split screen from the old days, but this is much smoother. nice.

I haven't tried treehouse yet for clearing the preview cache (I hate to update or change the program when I'm in the middle of a project -- if something goes wrong, well...). But I will as soon as I get the current job done. There is one thing that is a bit annoying for me. You'd think having a preview tab at the bottom and the f8 preview would be enough. but I find mousing down to the lower left a bit distracting, and I usually hit the Tidy tab by mistake and have to back out of that. So, it would be nice for me to have a duplicate preview shortcut maybe on the upper right quick bar. yeah, that would be about right. Just a personal thing. Don't see where to customize those tool bars (maybe I can?)

Oh, one other thing that doesn't belong in this thread -- block tabbing in the editor. If I highlight a block of code to indent it, of course it deletes it instead. For me it would be useful if tabbing was excepted from the normal delete action. I often have blocks of code lines that need to be indented. Highlight & tab would be a big help. Again, I think the current build on Tools is way better than it used to be.

I'm glad it helped. Have fun!

If you don't mind using keyboard shortcuts, F12 will take you in and out
          of the Preview tab.

Ctrl+F12 (landscape preview) will even refreshing itself for you as you
          edit.

Are you thinking of HTML-Kit 292? In HTML-Kit Tools, as long as more
than one line is highlighted, Tab and Shift+Tab can be used to indent
and unindent. Let me know if I misunderstood the question.
