Not responding

  • Guest, 19th Jan 2012 2:16 pm

    Hi

I am actually a user so not sure why guest post but anyway...

Windows7 user and the program is great but every time I save, html-kit tools goes to "not responding" for a second, sometimes up to about 4 seconds, before it saves the file. Very frustrating and over the course of a day, a lot of time wasted.

I have used the program on a non windows7 machine and was amazing speed with no errors.

    Any ideas why?

    Thanks

    Darren

If it didn't offer you the option to post with your login information,
you may need to log out from within User Assistant and log back in. But
hey, you got the first post on this new forum! :)

This probably has to do with the size of your file versioning database.
You can compact it under "Kit > Advanced > Compact data files." You can
even move backup.hsf file to a different folder (after closing Tools),
so you'll start rebuilding it with new files from that point on.

The other option would be setting "Edit > Preferences > Save file
version history" option to: No, except when using "File > Restore > Save
      with version history.

Finally, I'm working on managing versioning database size so it
shouldn't be necessary to keep doing this.

When I click "login to reply" I get the following page:

        Welcome Darren777

Continue posting to the support forum

Then I click the link "Continue posting to the support forum" and it takes me back to the forum homepage, then the same message appears again under the message, please login to reply etc etc

        Anyway, thanks for the reply!

        RE your answer:

You can compact it under "Kit > Advanced > Compact data files."

Where is that? I have looked through all menus but cannot find it?

        Also:

The other option would be setting "Edit > Preferences > Save file
version history" option to: No, except when using "File > Restore > Save

        What does that mean exactly?

        "File > Restore > Save
        with version history.

Is very bad english grammar and not clear at all what you're actually trying to do?

Also, I sometimes log on at a different pc which is not Win7, and the program is like lightning, excellent. I am currently working on a project with afriend and we both use this version and both have the same problems so there may be many more who are not asking for help!?!

Thanks for any help you can give, seriously great product if we can iron out these issues.

it won't see your login until you completely log out of
http://www.htmlkit.com/assistant/ and log back in. The next time you go
to the "Welcome Darren777" page, click "Logout" at the top right hand
corner and then follow "login to reply" link.

Please be patient while I'm working out some loose ends in the new forum
          page.

          Anyway, thanks for the reply!

It should be at the far right hand corner. If you scroll down to the
second image on the following page, you'll see a menu named "Kit" below
          the [X] button:

          http://www.htmlkit.com/blog/image-picker-2011-10/

          Also:

The other option would be setting "Edit> Preferences> Save file
version history" option to: No, except when using "File> Restore>
          Save with version history.

          What does that mean exactly?

"File> Restore> Save with version history.

Is very bad english grammar and not clear at all what you're actually
          trying to do?

:) It was my attempt at saying "Don't do file versioning" during regular
Ctrl+S save. But you can use "File > Restore > Save with version
history" menu option when you want to save a backup of the current file
          (as in "do file versioning").

Also, I sometimes log on at a different pc which is not Win7, and the
program is like lightning, excellent. I am currently working on a
project with afriend and we both use this version and both have the
same problems so there may be many more who are not asking for
          help!?!

It sounds like this is related to the size of backup.hsf file so if you
login to a new computer that file wouldn't be very large. By the way,
which version of HTML-Kit Tools are you using?

Thanks for any help you can give, seriously great product if we can
          iron out these issues.

          Darren

Thank you Darren. I appreciate it! :) And I am working on this issue.

            Hi again

I'm now get Not Responding when I open a file too - I've compacted data as advised and turned off references to revision saving.

            Any more ideas?

I think this program is excellent use this it approx. 8 hours a day but cannot really carry on for much longer as its adding 2-3 seconds every time I open a file or save it. Throughtout a day that's a lot of wasted time!

This is now sounding more like a system related issue. What happens when
you pick a file from "File > Recent Files?"

This shouldn't happen if you implement one of the suggestions I posted
earlier. If you haven't done that yet, here's a quick video on how to:

              http://www.htmlkit.com/go/youtube/disable-version-history

Let me know how it goes.

File > Recent Files only shows local files - I am editing directly on my server.

I have set my program exactly the asme as you show in the video, but it has made no difference.

I also bought this for my designer and she has the same problem as me, in all apsects, meaning saving v slow, not responding etc.

If I leave the program for 5 mins and then come back and make a tiny change on a file, same again, about 3 seconds to save and one second of that in Not Responding mode.

Also, now when I change directory on my server to access a different file, same thing, about 3 seconds some of which is NOt responding mode.

Juts as a side note, is there no way this forum can email when I receive a reply?

                Many thanks as always.

Question, is there a way to keep the ftp connection open for longer? I'm pretty sure thats the issue - constantly connecting - the program shouldn't go into not responding but I can live with that once every ten minutes as opposed to every 30 seconds.

HTML-Kit doesn't close the FTP connection every 30 seconds. If that's
happening, it's the FTP server doing that. The temporary not responding
message you see is also related to the amount of time it takes to
                    connect to the FTP server.

I'd check their documentation to see if they allow increasing timeout
                    value for idle FTP connections.

                    Hope this helps.

I didn't realize that you were talking about opening from and saving to
a FTP server. The speed of that, as you know, is going to vary on the
speed of the server and maybe even the connection. This would also
explain why you and your designer is having a similar experience.

If you have a list of suggestions can I ask then that 'ftp keep alive' be added?

There are many terms for this. What I mean is that somehow html-kit could ping the server every minute or so to keep the connection alive.

The time saved using this method would be huge for everyone who uses this to remotely develop, which I'm guessing is a lot.

                    Regards

The thing with FTP keep alive is that if more clients do that the host
could in turn implement more restrictive ways of managing what they
consider to be inactive connections. But keeping a connection alive
while there's active editing maybe a more balanced way to approach this
so let me think about that.

In the meantime, I've posted a new TreeHouse build with faster FTP
access. If you'd like to check it out before the next general release,
you can get it from TreeHouse section in your User Assistant account:
