What's the .NET Framework?

The .NET Framework is a part of Microsoft Windows that is used to run programs built for the .NET platform. This is somewhat similar to installing the Java Run-time Environment for running Java programs. Many Windows systems already have the .NET Framework, however it may be necessary to upgrade to a more recent version to run the latest .NET programs.

How do I get the .NET Framework?

The .NET Framework is a free download that can be obtained using one of the following methods:
  • Windows Update (recommended method)
Click the Windows Start button and select Windows Update. Pick .NET Framework from the available updates. If it is not listed, most likely the .NET Framework is already installed on your system.

  • .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package for Windows Vista, XP, 2003, 2000, ME, NT 4 (SP 6a) and 98.

More information on how to check if the .NET Framework is already installed on your system can be found on the .NET Framework download page.
